Thank you for this article. I guess my musical preferences are on the side of being in flawless control of what you're doing (rather than the will-she-make-it? route), and in singing, there's hardly a higher standard than the one Jo Stafford set. You've captured what made her so distinctive.
That said, I'm also devoted to the Jonathan and Darlene recordings; again, best of their kind. (Also a treasured family memory: the first time I played them for my late mother, a very reserved and proper Midwestern lady, she laughed the hardest I've ever seen from her in my life -- nearly fell off the sofa, she was shaking so hard.)

I was told by a choral teacher that KU has perfect pitch. :-)
